Migrant Futures Institute
The Migrant Futures Institute (MFI) is being established at Goldsmiths in 2025 following an 8-figure philanthropic commitment made by Oak Foundation in autumn 2024. The MFI is set to be a beacon of rigorous research, innovative policy solutions, and creative approaches to understanding and reshaping migration discourse. Our mission is to tell a new and compelling story, one that addresses the deep crises of division and dispossession faced by migrant communities. By doing so, we hope to mend the social fabric and ensure that migrant futures – and by extension, our collective futures – are secure, hopeful, and embraced.
Through collaborative research and creative practice, the MFI will engage directly with migrants, working with them to generate new knowledge, cultivate understanding, and support their well-being, creative work, and social aspirations. The Institute’s three main objectives are:
- To establish a sustainable research institute focused on shaping hopeful futures for migrants and their communities. The centre will prioritise perspectives from migrant scholars, individuals, and communities, giving a platform to voices too often unheard.
- To convene and platform individuals and groups from across civil society, academia, enterprise, and beyond – locally, nationally, and internationally – to co-create cutting-edge research with real social, cultural, and policy impact.
- To open new pathways into advanced study, research, creative work, and enterprise for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
